DD, hope you don't mind me jumping in here.
In his report, part of which was read to the court, Dr Sutherland said the device was "completely ineffectual as a piece of detection equipment".

Sentencing was adjourned to a later, unfixed date and Bolton was released on conditional bail.

Course not! Was out and about when I got the call. Few bevvies tonight. Hope you will all be joining me in 'spirit' if not in person.

Seems verdict was 11 - 1 majority so there was one daft beggar on the jury. Thankfully only 1!

No doubt much more will be emerging in next 24 hours and will let you know what I find out.

Odd that sentencing adjourned?? Perhaps Bolton indicated he is ready to appeal. Well stuff him. Maybe he will share a cell with Jim McCormick and they can compare notes on the good old days when it was first class all the way.

Hoping Judge Hone will make it another ten stretch!

Best to all!!!

Why thank you Polomint. Though should say my part in the downfall of McCormick and Bolton a relatively small one, and still a good few loose ends to tie up. Not least to get confirmations that the devices are no longer in use from Iraq, Thailand, Mexico, Kenya and probably a good few other places as well.

Also to see more come out as to UK Government/MOD/Royal Engineers support for Bolton, and perhaps some heads to roll. Of course will let you know as and when hear anything of interest on these scores.

In meantime, as a result of defence witnesses from the British Society of Dowsers in Bolton case (Grahame Gardner and Geoffrey Crockford or, as I have re-styled them, Grahame Fairiesatthebottomofthegardner and Geoffrey Crockfullofshit), have been doing a bit more digging around their website. If you want to get a flavour of just how woo-ish the dowsers are, check out the following, but be warned, it may make you facepalm.

http://www.britishdowsers.org/pdf/Inter ... itevs1.pdf

One aspect that worries me is that some of them claim to be able to use dowsing for diagnosis of illnesses, and to be able to recommend treatments. See here:

http://www.britishdowsers.org/advice/pr ... ster.shtml

Initial reading of this suggests potential for some similarities with the 'psychic' surgeons and other peddlars of dodgy pseudo medicine. Perhaps worth some more investigation.

All best,
DD

Gary Bolton of GT200 infamy is due to be sentenced at 0930 today. Really hoping he gets the same full 10 stretch as McCormick. he might not have sold as many or made quite as much as the delightful Jim, but reports from Thailand and Mexico suggest that were deaths and injuries resulting from the inevitable failure of his devices to operate, as well as arrests annd possibly torture arising from false positive indications of drugs and explosives.

I don't see his crimes as any less serious than McCormick, so here's hoping the Judge does the right thing.

Not bad. Am a bit unclear as to why less than McCormick. O.K. maybe he didn't sell as many, but the same crime in essence.

If had been any less would have been well peeved, but will take the 7 as long as they get their hands on all his bloody money so he doesn't come out to enjoy himself.

Am working on pushing for compensation claims from victims e.g. in Thailand and Mexico, to help rub it in.

Still more to come out regarding the support he received from UK Trade and Industry, Defence Export Sales Organisation, Defence Manufacturers Association (now ADS) , Royal Engineers Export Support Team (REEST). Hopefully some heads will roll so that the lessons are well and truly learned.

Three British government departments and agencies promoted the international sale of fake bomb detectors which are thought to have cost lives, despite a Whitehall-wide warning they were useless.

Well spotted B. Kudos to Rob Booth at The Guardian for his excellent follow up.

Have been beavering away in the background with others including Techowiz and Meiron to try to ensure the full story comes out, and this is phase 1. Yippee! More to follow I hope. It really will be great to see this one properly wrapped up. Appreciation for all the support here and in the old place down the years. Has been a right old battle.

Well done to all involved in reaching this point!!!!!

Here is a long and detailed account of the McCormick affair. Over a month old now, but there is a lot of interesting reading. I found it on the JREF Forum.
