New stalking law

Post by chaggle »

http://www.itv.com/news/2016-12-07/stal ... complaint/
Stalkers will be hit with court orders from the moment their victims raise the alarm under new plans.
Police are to get new powers to apply for measures to stop people stalking strangers or acquaintances before it spirals out of control.
Suspected stalkers could be ordered to stay away from their targets or have their internet restricted even if they have not yet been arrested or charged.
Not much detail on how this would be implemented but I can foresee it being abused.

Looks like it - someone who wanted to make trouble for an enemy could make unfounded allegations which the subject of the complaint might find it hard to refute.

The law seems prone to ignoring a problem for a long time, then suddenly overreacting - as with the handling of recent VIP paedophile conspiracy cases.

Quite.

Even worse, the stalker could get a quick court order in before the victim.

Hopefully there will be some safeguards.
